Who do you trust the most? The government, the media, private businesses, neighbours, those you follow on Insta, podcast influencers?
It’s an interesting question, and the answer will be personal and unique to each of us. Did you consider answering ‘Myself’, though? Do you, perhaps, trust yourself the most, rather than anyone external?
I see trusting yourself as being closely connected to listening to your own intuition. Recently, I’ve felt the need to turn within more and more. Perhaps it’s related to the winter season, perhaps it’s a response to the current times – a need to create silence and quiet the outside noise. Perhaps it’s my way of self-expressing… And maybe it’s all of these things.
The result of turning within is that my internal instructions get a little louder and a little sharper, and I trust my intuition far more than anything outside of me.
But here’s the fascinating thing about turning within (well, it’s fascinating to me, maybe just interesting to others): it fuels my attention outward.
When I am in service to my family, my friends, my clients and my community, they always get the best of me if I’ve taken the time to turn my attentioninward first.
This is an approach very few people take. I say this not to imply how well I’ve mastered it (hell no) or how different I am to you, but rather to share with you what I have to remind myself every day – that life works best from the inside out.
Success, happiness, your wellbeing – they’re not things that you go and get; they reside inside of you.
The process of turning within can be started by revisiting your personal values. If your personal values are your true north, helping you with the direction you take in life and the way you go about living, then revisiting them is a very useful (and effective) place to begin.
Notice how consistently your actions are aligned to your values. This will naturally see you achieve your success, happiness and wellbeing.
Remember, too, that you are a masterpiece in motion. That’s right: we are always changing. Be open to the fact that your values are fluid and that, as you grow, they may move in a different direction also.
Question
What does turning your attention inward look like for you?
Practice
Conduct a values inventory, as a solo activity. It can be done on a walk, on the train, at a coffee shop – wherever you can think and reflect. What do you care about? What do you stand for? And how do you know this to be true – what evidence or data is there that something is a strong value of yours? A recent conversation which was emotionally charged for you? A recent event to which you had a strong inner response? Be willing to be fluid and see how your values evolve or change as you grow.
